FAQs
What are the first steps to starting the process?
Please provide your contact details in the Enquire Now section so that I can arrange a free telephone consultation (up to an hour) with you. We will start by talking through the details around the referral including any mental health diagnoses or challenges, safeguarding, and caring for safety with those attending sessions. We will then explore what family therapy is, the ways in which it could benefit your family, a little bit about my own therapeutic approach, and whether or not the time is right for you and your family to start this journey.
How do I know if I need family therapy?
Family therapy may be helpful if your family is experiencing recurring conflicts, communication breakdowns, or struggles with change, such as divorce, illness, or transitions. It’s also beneficial when a family member is dealing with mental health challenges, and the dynamics of the family need to adapt to provide support. If you feel stuck or disconnected as a family, therapy can help create understanding and restore balance.
How is family therapy different from other types of therapy?
Unlike individual therapy, which focuses on a single person’s thoughts and behaviors, family therapy looks at the relationships and dynamics between family members. It views the family as a system where each person’s actions affect the others. The goal is to address patterns, improve communication, and create healthier relationships, rather than focusing solely on one individual.
How long does family therapy last?
The length of therapy depends on the issues being addressed and the goals of the family. Some families benefit from short-term therapy, with 6–12 sessions focused on specific concerns. Others may need longer-term support to address deeper or ongoing challenges. We’ll work together to determine the best approach for your family.
What happens during a family therapy session?
In family therapy, everyone has the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings in a safe and supportive environment. Sessions often involve identifying patterns in communication and behavior, exploring family roles, and working together to find solutions to conflicts. Tools like genograms, narrative techniques, and psychoeducation may be used to foster understanding and growth.
Do all family members need to attend therapy?
While it’s ideal for all members to participate, it’s not always necessary. Therapy can still be effective even if only some family members attend. The important thing is that those present are open to exploring family dynamics and working toward positive change.
Can family therapy help with parenting challenges?
Absolutely. Family therapy provides tools to navigate parenting difficulties, improve parent-child relationships, and address issues like discipline, communication, and emotional regulation. It also supports parents in understanding their children’s unique needs and developmental stages.
What if a family member doesn’t want to participate?
It’s not uncommon for some family members to feel hesitant about therapy. In these cases, it can still be helpful for the willing participants to attend. Often, changes made by those involved can have a positive ripple effect on the entire family system.
Do you offer online family therapy sessions?
Yes, I offer online sessions for families who prefer the flexibility of virtual therapy. Online sessions provide the same level of support and collaboration as in-person therapy, making it accessible even if family members are in different locations.
Is family therapy only for families in crisis?
Not at all. Family therapy is beneficial for any family looking to strengthen their relationships, improve communication, or navigate life transitions. It’s not just about resolving crises—it’s also about fostering resilience and connection.
